For some patients, laser vision correction surgery is not the best course of treatment.  In patients over 50 years old the natural lens inside the eye is no longer flexible and cannot focus for near tasks. For these patients, we may recommend the Phakic intraocular lens (IOL).

In this procedure the natural lens inside the eye and is removed and an Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) is inserted.  This is exactly the same procedure performed in cataract surgery even though the person does not yet have a cataract.  Almost everyone develops cataracts in the 60's.
