Conjunctivitis is also known as "Pinkeye". It is caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the clear tissue on the outside the eye.  The most common symptoms are red, irritated eyes and tearing.

It can be caused by bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection or any other cause of inflammation, such as dry eyes or allergies.

The classic sign of a bacterial infection is a thick yellowish green discharge with red irritated eyes.  Often the eyes are stuck shut on awakening.

The classic sign of a viral infection is extreme tearing and light sensitivity with red irritated eyes.

Allergies present with itchy and red irritated eyes.

Dry eyes typically present with burning and red irritated eyes.
