Many small blood vessels travel through a space between the white of the eye (sclera) and the clear outer coating (conjunctiva). If the eye is irritated, those blood vessels become dilated to carry more blood into the area of irritation and you will see red lines on the eye ("Blood-shot"). If a blood vessel breaks, the blood can fan out to a larger area and instead of lines you see an area of hemorrhage. More info below the video:

These are quite common, especially in older patients. There often is a history of violent coughing or sneezing. Poorly corrected hypertension and trauma are also frequent causes. Some rare blood disorders can also cause this.
