Hi, I'm Don Steensma.

This is the Age of Information and this website is an extension of my office out into the world of information.  My story is a little different than most optometrist's.

I was raised in Michigan but apparently did not grow-up in Michigan.  I dropped out of High School but still managed to join the U.S. Air Force in 1965.  I became a jet mechanic and grew-up in the Air Force.  The Air Force taught me responsiblity and the importance of personal development.  Anyway, after 4 years in the Air Force I went to college.  Three years later I had completed 4 years of high school and 4 years of college.   After 4 more years of Optometry College, I graduated from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1976.

After a brief position as a Clinical Doctor at the optometry college clinic, I joined Dr. Ralph Moses's practice on Ventura Rd. in Port Hueneme, California.  After 14 years of partnership, Dr. Moses retired.  This practice now has a history of over 50 years of optometric service to the community.  In 1994 the practice moved to our present location on Channel Islands Blvd.

Since my Air Force experience, I have always felt the need to improve my knowledge as much as possible so I have taken extensive continuing education courses. In 1993 I  bcame a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.  This requires advanced training and testing,  Membership as a Fellow is why I have the letters F.A.A.O. after my name.  Very few optometrists can use those letters.

Ever since Optometry College, I have been a member of the American Optometric Association, the California Optometric Association and the Tri-County Optometric Association.

My practice treats most types of eye disease, infections and allergies. I am licensed to use diagnostic and therapeutic drugs by the State of California.   I also co-manage eye surgery including cataract surgery and LASIK surgery with the best surgeons in Ventura County.

Our patients come from all over Ventura County.  Most live in Oxnard or Port Hueneme, but many live in Ventura, Camarillo and beyond.  They range in age from young children to older seniors.

I love my job.  I have lots of patients that I first started treating when they were kids.  Now I'm seeing their grand-kids.

I am also a Yoga instructor.   I am a registered yoga teacher with The Yoga Alliance.  I  teach a weekly Community All-Level Yoga Class.  The class is 10:00 - 11:30 every Sunday morning at The Yoga Channel, an Oxnard yoga studio.  See http://www.theyogachannel.net/ for more information.  Private one-on-one yoga instruction is also available.  Give it a try sometime - Yoga can be life changing!

That's my story for what it's worth.  I hope you trust me to take good care of you. I really will!
